Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!” Isaiah 6:8
“When they (Peter, Andrew, James and John) had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.” Luke 5:10,11
What does it mean to answer the call of God? For Isaiah, it meant being a prophet, proclaimingthe word of God to God’s people. Sometimes they were glad to hear the word; other times theywould prefer that he keep quiet, or go away, because his words were hard to hear. For Peter, Andrew, James and John, it meant leaving everything – their families, livelihoods, everything they knew – to follow Jesus. They had no idea where it would lead, but they knew they had to do it all the same.
What does it mean for us? I am convinced that God calls each one of us to follow, to serve, to teach and preach, each in our own way, using our own unique gifts. They may seem small or insignificant to us, but every gift shared changes us, and helps to change the world, and helps us to know more fully that abundant life found in Jesus Christ.
Let us pray:
Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Peace and blessing,
