Tomorrow is Ascension Day!
Ascension Day falls forty days after Easter, and marks the last of Jesus’ post-Resurrection appearances. The lessons focus on the final instructions of Jesus to the disciples, and the beginnings of their ministry and mission.
One of my favorite set of verses is from the Acts of the Apostles:
“While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:10,11
In other words: Why are you standing there, looking up at the sky? Remember what you have learned and heard and seen – there’s work for you to do!
As followers of Jesus, we continue to seek ways to do ministry in our own time. Our mission statement gives us clear and concise direction:
“The mission of St Thomas is: To Worship; to Nurture; to Serve; together in Christ.” We will gather for worship tomorrow at 12:15 in the church. All are welcome.
If you can’t join us in person, please join us in prayer:
Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
Peace and blessing,
